Women Benefit More From Strength Training

A huge new study shows strength training for women is especially beneficial.

We have known for a long time the benefits of strength training for everyone, but this new study shows an exceptional thing; Women can expect a 30% improvement in prevention of heart disease just from strength training.

Nothing Compares to Strength Training

This large study resulted in these findings according to study author Martha Gulati :

“What surprised us the most was the fact that women who do muscle strengthening had a reduction in their cardiovascular mortality by 30%,”

She goes on to say:

“We don’t have many things that reduce mortality in that way.”

What’s important to note is that the benefits from proper strength training are lost on many women as they often have fears of injury, bulking up or even intimidation within traditional gym environments.  All of these concerns are addressed by the ZeroForce program we offer, but generally these fears are unfounded even in traditional exercise gyms.

Study Data Pooled Over 20 Years

This study of 400,000 participants (!) found here, and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology shows the benefits for women are likely due to the unique attributes in a women’s body relating to their genetic predisposition to have less muscle mass than men, but here is a quote as to why this might be a secret benefit to women:

People born female have less muscle and lower aerobic capacity in general. Also, women have more capillaries feeding part of their muscles, Shiroma says. The findings show women need to do less exercise to change their baseline of aerobic and muscular strength. “It might be that this relative increase in strength [in women compared to men] is what’s driving this difference in benefit,” he says.

More Aerobic Than Aerobics

For over 30 years I’ve trained men, women and children in proper, slow-motion, high-intensity exercise.  Our ZeroForce exercise program is based upon the SuperSlow (r) protocol which was started from an osteoporosis prevention study in the 1980’s at the University of Florida, Gainesville medical school.

Our program at DST has always promoted high-intensity work because it is the most efficient way to build muscle and promote all the health benefits of exercise.  This quote from the article discussing this study on NPR reinforces our reasoning for this:

And a recent study found strength training can be even more effective than aerobic activity in controlling blood sugar in people with diabetes.
